For Labor Day we headed to Maine for 3 days of hiking.

Day 1: South and North Crocker & Redington

Met Kath and Brian on top of South Crocker and hiked with them the rest of the day. Easy hike up to South Crocker and then over to North Crocker, and back again. Then off to Redington. After much reading of previous trips, we decided to tackle the herd path and were pleasantly suprised to find it almost as easy to follow as a regular trail. The only bushwack component of this hike is 300 yards across a clearing to a dirt road you cannot miss. From the summit of Redington we decided to take the logging roads down to make a big loop. Bring sneakers for the 5 mile road walk!

Day 2: Abraham, Spaulding, and Sugarloaf

We started at Caribou Pond Road (same starting location as Day 1) and made our way over to Abraham by passing the spur trails to Sugarloaf and Spaulding with plans to hit those on the return trip, with hopes that the clouds would clear out. They didn't but it was a great hike - if not a long one.

Day 3:Saddleback and The Horn

Best for last - great hike - didn't see any other hikers until we hit The Horn!! Then we saw 50, mostly AT Through Hikers by the time we returned to the summit of Saddleback!

Pics, maps, profiles and more details can be found on our Recent Hikes web page:

Can't wait to go back and do this section of the AT again next year - let us know if you want to join us.

wAY TO GO

Nice holiday,I'll be headin' up there to tackle those as well. Can't wait......MJ Got any tips give me a jingle:D

MJ - Tips.

Go with somebody else with a second car so you can do these as one ways - go up Sugarbush from Caribou Pond road - the down hill is tough at the end of the day

Save Saddleback for the best weather

Do the Redington Herd Path

Bring lots of film for your camera

Nothing technical about any of the hikes - just loads of fun!

If your into backpacking there is a nice campsite at the northern end of Eddy Pond - another right next to the river by Caribou Pond Rd - you could even car camp there
