Date of Hike: 05/11/2010
Trail Conditions: Mostly dry with only minor mud areas up to Eagle Pass. Snow from the pass to the hut, well packed, some ice. Hut to summit ranges from several feet of packed snow to rime-ice rocks with little cover. Some blowdowns along the way which are easily avoided. Ice chunks raining down into the pass from the cliffs above caused some concern.
Special Equipment Required: Used microspikes for ascent between the Pass and the hut, but they were not really needed. Took them off and bare-booted to summit as there were enough exposed areas for regular boot traction. Snowshoes stayed in the pack all day, though they would have been needed if the deep snow had not been so well packed down.
Comments: Skipped out of work early at noon and took a run up the mountain. Beautiful sunny day, spectacular rime ice formations, complete wintery landscape yet bare-bootable all the way to the summit. Greenleaf Hut open for business, too. Doesn't get much better than this!
