It is winter time in the Whites and I love it. The trail had 12 - 18" of nice soft snow. Broke trail a majority of the way up Old Bridle but then a group of 4 took over and I followed. Snow was not packed out from hut to treeline. Couple of barebooters left some nice holes to manuever through. Above treeline trail was bare rock in some places and deeper drifts in other places. Hard to decide if I wanted to chew up snowshoes or struggle through drifts. Very windy and cold at the top.
I suggest snowshoes to keep the trail in shape for everyone. It is possible, but ignorant, to bareboot. Poles with powder baskets a must. Full winter clothing required above treeline. Goggles helped big time.
