Some people were out for their last minute shopping ....... while others were hiking in the Adirondack.
Annie and I have almost a tradition in the Christmas period: we go hiking on December 24. It's a quiet day and there is hardly anyone on the trails. And this year, we did not do an exception to our tradition. Returning from a visit to Seymour, the day of the beginning of winter, I ask my partner what summit she would like to go for this day. Having not done much hiking during the last 2 months, she chooses Big Slide. Especially the weather forecast is supposed to be a great day. And this mountain is superb to do, especially on a nice day. During our road to get to Garden parking, we were had a super colorful sunrise. Wow! At this point, the sky is almost cloudless. We arrive in the parking lot, we are the 4th car, but we will not see anyone during the day. It is cold but we warmed up pretty quickly and there is no wind. And at some point, the sky is dark blue, almost purple. Not much snow, 3 to 8 inches max, but the trail is on a hard icy base, ice and the snow is powdery. Several sections were icy, but our Hillsound trail crampon did the work. WOW!! WOW! And I say it again WOW WOW WOW! The panorama of the Great Range, Marcy, Giant etc..and a beautiful view over the valley. We spent some time at the summit, without saying anything, in shock of this magnificent landscape. We did not want to go back to the car. I think,it's the most beautiful view on Big Slide we had and we did several times. It is the summit that we climbed the most in the Adirondack. Annie and I have taken so many pictures (150), and we stopped quite often that our hike was longer than expected. So instead to have supper at home on the Christmas Eve, we had our supper at Subway!
And it is why I say that, while some were out for their last minute shopping, others were hiking in the Adirondack and have had the chance to have under their eyes beautiful scenery.
