I am planning a trip towards the end of the winter season and was wondering when the thaw typically begins in the daks (relevant for peakbagging, snowshoeing/skiing, ice climbing). Most of my winter trips have been before early march.

I am sure much depends on the year, and weather patters. But is it typical to see spring coming in before early april?

Blacklab2020,

No, but spring thaws sure can happen prior to April.

Although peak snow melt period(s) typically occur over the April to mid May period, I wouldn't wait much beyond mid March if you're hoping for a good shot at winter conditions.

Cheers.

All true, but you can find snow into June as well! I avoid the DAX in April and May - Mud/rotten snow/ice/swollen streams/thunderstorms/etc.
