Lean-to Spread Sheet

I'm in the process of compiling a lean-to spread sheet (excel file) that contains a list of all the publicly accessible lean-tos in New York State. I figured I'd post what I have here so far since it will probably be of some interest to those who post on this forum but not on ADKForum or ADKHighPeaks where I posted the first list last year.

The list (link to a zip file containing the spreadsheet located at the bottom of this post) contains lean-tos located on New York State Forest Preserve and Easement lands within the Adirondacks and the Catskills, as well as in State Parks, State Forests, National Forest land, and local parks and private property that are accessible to the public. Most of these lean-tos are available for camping, some are day use only and are included in a separate list.

The ones in the Adirondacks and the Catskills were compiled using the Nat Geo and NYNJTC Maps, with help from the forum members at ADKForum and ADKHighPeaks concerning updates (new lean-tos since the maps were made as well as lean-tos that no longer exist). Most of those that are located outside the Adirondacks and the Catskills are located along either the Finger Lakes Trail, the North Country Trail, or the Long Path, since I found out about most of them through online and print guides for these trails. There are a few other ones, however, that I've managed to find out about and include.

Please feel free to mention any mistakes that you find, lean-tos that no longer exist, typos, or new lean-tos that you know of that aren't on the list.

One of my long term goals is to stay in every single one of the overnight lean-tos. Right now by my count, I'm at 66 out of 295... just over 21% of the way there!

Couple of questions for those who might know the answer: Highland Forest County Park, Watkins Glen State Park, and Buttermilk Falls State Park all have lean-tos, but I couldn't find any reference as to whether or not overnight camping is allowed in them. The FLT goes through Watkins Glen State Park, but the trail guides that I used didnt make any mention of these shelters. Additionally, the shelter in Highland Forests were referred to briefly as "day shelters" without any further explanation. The lean-tos in Buttermilk Falls State Park are accessible via a side trail from the FLT/NCT. Does anyone have any additional information on overnight camping in these parks?

Seems like a good resource, there used to be a list in the back of the White Mtn Guide but it led too many people to use them so it vanished

It would be more useful to me if it had Lat/Long

Found a few more lean-tos that will be added in a future version:

Out Back Inn in Italy Hill State Forest.

Evangeline on private property in Steuben County.

Unknown lean-to in Letchworth State Park (anyone got a name and/or an exact location for this one?)

Unknown lean-to on the Darien Lake Conservation Trail (name and location for this one?)

Hesse and Camp Sam Wood lean-tos on the FLT (anyone know what management area these are in?)

Wildcat, Fingerboard, Willem Brian Memorial, West Mountain, RPH, Morgan Stewart Memorial, Telephone Pioneers, and Wiley shelters all on the AT. Anyone got any information about any of these that might be in State Parks and not just on the AT corridor? I think West Mountain might be in Bear Mountain State Park but I'm not sure.

I was going to mention Darien Lake and Italy Hill,
- Add Lean-to at Hi Tor Overlook (Naples)
- Add Lean-to Hi Tor (Off E Hill Road - Uphill behind Caretakers Residence)
- Add Lean-To's on Westside Overland trail (Chautauqua County) I think there are 4.
- Add Lean-to's on Eastside Overland Trail (Chautauqua County) I think there are 4 here also, though it has been almost 15 years since I was out winter backpacking there.
Add Lean-to's at Allegany State Park (4-5 Lean-tos)
there are still a whole bunch to be added on the Conservation/FLT.
