I was a bit surprised to see some leaves were already changing on my way down Route 302 today. Between the Willey House and West Side Road, I noticed a few birch and maple were already starting to turn. Seems a few weeks early for the first trees to be changing - perhaps due to the lack of sunlight?

The trees in the swampy / wet area of my property always change sooner than the ones in the dry areas. Maybe it has to do with all the (censored) rain we've been having.

I've noticed this, too: trees with their feet in swampy areas tend to start to turn much earlier. I've broadly assumed it was that they were more stressed, or possibly more exposed to higher acidity.

All this pains me -- on one hand, anxious to get back to snow and skiing. On the other -- my God, has this summer passed quickly, all the rain or no.

Tree roots need air--it is possible that the saturated soils are "drowning" them. (Just a guess on my part.)

I noticed some very orange maples on the way up Route 49 to Waterville Valley on Saturday 8/2/08. I thought to myself "When will someone post this observation." On Sunday I noticed some of the maples on my land had some orange leaves on isolated branches. I usually notice this in mid August every year.

At any rate, I believe we will see at least three more months of rain before the snow flies. :D

The leaves on popular trees start to drop in my pool in mid August. They started dropping last weekend a few eeeks early. :( With all this rain it hasn't felt much like summer. I hope the next two weekend are good.

Yep, I noticed this too.....that's alright, I'm ready to be rid of the summer bugs! Bring on the snow! :)
