Here's a link to the Ledyard Canoe Club, part of the Dartmouth Outing Club. I came across this doing some research, oddly enough, about some western rivers.

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~lcc/

It has some terrific links.

... I wonder if there is some silly member who carries a rubber chicken and has been known to tote ice cream on paddles?

I wasn't a member of the LCC, but I did go on the annual John Ledyard Memorial Trip to the Sea, a week-long canoe trip from Hanover to Long Island Sound. I hung out by the river enough, but aside from using canoes to get to cabins I didn't paddle much in college.

It was actually the Ledyard Connecticut River Trip to the Sea that piqued my curiosity and led me to the website, which doesn't say anything about it. I came across it as a footnote to an historical account of western exploration. It is a tradition that predates the LCC (1920) as described in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ledyard

"He left (Dartmouth) for two months without permission in August and September of (1772, his first year at Dartmouth), led a mid-winter camping expedition, and finally abandoned the college for good in May 1773."

Clearly a man with his head on straight. :D

Thanks a lot for posting this thread and the links! I was unaware of this adventurer (go ahead, hit me with the chicken), and I'll be interested to read more about him.
