Does anyone know of any legit campsites on the way to Owl's head from Lincoln woods? Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

J

Once you get on the Lincoln Brook trail there are lots. Keep your eyes open near each stream crossing and you can spot several hardened sites. I think at the second major crossing there are some particularly nice ones.

I'd go beyond the Franconia Brook trail myself, it gets much more traffic.

I believe I have seen those before, but am not sure if they are legal. I especially remember the one across Lincoln brook (the largest crossing) Do you know if it's legit? Do you think these are findable in the dark?

2004/2005 BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING RULES
White Mountain National Forest
(Printed by Dept. of Agriculture)

under section on restrictions for "Congressionally Designated Wilderness"

"Additional regulations for Caribou-Speckled Mtn., Presidential/Dry River and Pemigewasset:"

"No camping, wood or charcoal fires within 200 feet of any trail except at designated campsites"

This means: NO CAMPING OR CAMPFIRES WITHIN 200 FEET OF ANY TRAIL IN THE PEMIGEWASSET WILDERNESS AREA EXCEPT AT DESIGNATED CAMPSITES. (except those areas where the limit is 1/4 mile)

Strictly enforced by Rangers and peeved night hikers.:D

JFYI

There are plenty of suitable sites, but you have to hunt for them, i.e. best to arrive in daylight.
Amen.

I must admit...there has been a time or two at night where I would honestly say I went 300 feet off the trail to pitch a tent, only to wake up in the morning being able to see the trail. I suspect others may have done this as well...but alas...no names.

Thank god I am an early riser...

Peace

about 60 yards south of the owls head cairn is an illegal site right off the west side of the trail. from there head maybe 15-20 paces closer to the brook and a bit further south(30-40 paces) to a nice level spot under a bunch of pines.
dont know if it was 200ft but you couldnt see our tents from the trail which was good enouph for the rangers.
peace
