I met an AMC group for a Sunday (11/22) hike of Mounts Liberty & Flume. We all geared up and introduced ourselves and we were off at about 8:15.
We followed the Whitehouse Trail and after a short walk along the bike path and we came to the Liberty Spring Trail. At this point we stopped for a layer break and then headed off into the woods.
About an hour and a half later and we were at the tent site just before the Franconia Ridge Trail. Just before noon we were at the summit of Liberty with clear skies and warm temps. We hiked over to the summit of Mt Flume and sat down to have some lunch. We were joined by a large group of hikers and after lunch we each took pictures for the other group and then headed back for Liberty.
Pretty uneventful trip down until our leaders gave up the lead and I was up front reminiscing about the Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics of yesteryear with one of the other members of our group and realized we had led the group off trail. By this time we were close to finishing as we could hear the vehicles going by on the highway. One of our leaders led us on a short bushwhack and got us back to the bike path which we followed all the way back to the Flume visitors center rather then follow the Whitehouse trail through the woods back to the cars. We all had headlamps but decided that the bike path was much easier going after a full day of hiking.
Great hike, great views, and temps in the high 40s if not 50s even at the summit. One very small section of just a tiny bit of ice but it was all bare-bootable the whole way. Stream crossings were all very easy. A total of 10.4 miles done in just under 9 hours. Another 2.9 miles of the AT done and exactly one year since my first 4000 footer and I’ve done 28 in NH and 3 in Vermont in that year.
Felt more like a late September day than November!
