Date of Hike: February 23rd, 2008
Conditions: 3 inches of fresh powder on the Falling Waters Trail, tail was well broken. Franconia Ridge Trail was hardpacked snow with ice most of the way. Some sections of powder and snow drifts. Old Bridal Path was smiliar to Falling Water trail, 3-5 inches of fresh powder.
Special Equipment: Some kind of traction is essential, we wore snowshoes the entire way. Along the ridgeline, crampons would have been nice a few times. But showshoes were the best options getting on and off the ridgeline.
Comments: Beautiful day and conditions for a winter hike, especially for a few first timers. Temperature was about 20F leaving the parking lot and that remained constant throughout the day. Wind was blowing between 10-15 MPH on the ridgeline with gusts occasionally up to 20 MPH. There was a broken cloud layer around 4400'. Throughout the day the clouds dissipated and we had a wonderful view to the East including Presidentials.
