I'm contemplating hiking Mt's Abraham and Ellen weekend of April 4, 5 before mud season starts. I searched and found some TR's for hikes in early April. I found one where writer reports parking at end of plowed road over Lincoln Gap to go to Mt Abraham. I'm thinking this might be a good aproach for this time of year as beginnings of trail at Jeruselem TH might be muddy while hiking to higher elevation on Lincoln Gap road will be snow on pavement. Most likely do this as an out & back hike to avoid long drive over the mountains to spot cars before and at end of day. Does anybody think parking at end of plowed Lincoln Gap Road will be a problem???

We might spot a car at the Sugarbush South Basin parking and descend via a blue Jester & Snowball ski trails from Lincoln Peak. That might be interesting and shouldn't take much time to spot a car there.

Mud Season

Lincoln Gap probably opens some time during mud season so you might want to wait until end of mud season. State of VT closes trails on Mts Mansfield and Camels Hump from mid-April until Memorial Day Weekend. Mud season is actually pretty hard to define. Mostly depends on elevation and melting of snowpack. That's why I'm trying to get this hike in before mid-April and opting for hiking up the road instead of starting from Jeruselem TH.

Also after Memorial Day humidity becomes a factor. I'm hoping for cool clear weather of early spring.
