Date of Hike: April 11, 2009
Trail Conditions: Hard-packed snow from the bottom, with some short sections of OBP melted out. The major crossing of brook on Falling Waters was fairly easy as the snow bridge was mostly intact. The ridge has snow and lots of ice (about 2" coating of new ice seems to the order for above treeline in the Whites from the last storm).
Special Equipment Required: Our party wore either microspikes or stabilizers nearly the entire day. We switched over to crampons for the descent of Lafayette (did the loop counterclockwise), and then back to microspikes/stabilizers are we nearly treeline. Snowshoes not needed as the snow is still too hard for postholing. They might be necessary once temps return to normal.
Comments: Another great day above treeline with old friends. Life is good ...
