Good day for a hike. Warm but not hot, but a little humid. Bookah, Joanne and I.
Climbed the ridge between the 2 drainages, starting about 1/4 mile uphill on the Peekamoose road, past the Kanape Brook parking area. Started out with a large rock pile, open and shady woods, a mixture of conifers and oaks.
The woods stayed open and the gradient got steeper the farther we went. Many interesting cliff bands and Bookah discovered all the good cuts and ramps, waiting on the top of each for us. We crossed a couple of overgrown woods road, got on one for 100', back off, then followed another for 1/8 mile uphill until we 'whacked straight for the summit along the ridge.
Nice small top, and unusual for having a large rock cairn.
To do another route, we headed down the neigboring ridge. Its was overgrown and a little 'ferny' for the first 400' to 450'. The ferns hid the rocks and downed branches. All of a sudden the woods opened up, turned to conifers and it was a downhill (very STEEP downhill at times) stroll to, over, and thru the cliffs. We came out almost exactly as planned, about a 10 min uphill walk on the Peek road to the car.
Little Rocky is a gem and would have been our 102/102 hike in a few weeks but I saved Stoppel Point so the family could join us. On to Cradle Rock in the next 4-5 days and then plans for the hike to Stoppel around the end of the month. Right now, might finish on Labor Day weekend, with the backup the following weekend.
This has been a long, fun experience and even at runup to the end, part of me wants to drag my feet so it can go on and on.
