I am planning my White Mountain Trip XVII for next year. I want a base for Dixville Notch, South Pond, Nash Stream areas. Anyone know or recommend reasonable cabins/cottages/efficiency motel/kitchenette that several participants can stay at instead of camping. Looking at the map, I would stay probably in Groveton or Stratford off US 3. Anyone know anything about Maidstone State Park across the river in VT. Any particular campsite that anyone would recommend. Are there any other campgrounds in the area with showers? I probably will go in late August.

Bob & Geri: I like that combination at Big Rock, although I was leaning on those auto camping staying at Maidstone Campground across the Connecticut River in Vermont. Being near a lake with loons sounds very pictureque and attractive. Do you or anyone out there have any experience with this CG (in terms of noise control, cleanliness, campsite privacy) and as for the cabins (comfort, refrigerator/microwave, cleanliness).

Waumbek: I will add that CG to my list but I believe the Groveton/Stratford strip is more convenient to the hikes I am planning. Maidstone State Park is right now my #1 choice for camping but Big Rock sounds like a feasible alternative as it keeps the two groups of my trip participants together. Is Milan Fire Tower much of a hike. I might have some open time for a visit there if it is worthwhile.

Sorry - no we have not stayed there yet ourselves, but drive by it on our trips to Colebrook. We do plan to stay there next year when we hike the Percy peaks do to the central location.
