Great Gulf mostly packed to Osgood, but some holes exist. Staying in the middle of the trail helps! Osgood to treeline had snowshoe tracks, but lots of holes! Snowshoes would have been useful here. Above treeline mostly bare rock, covered w/ rime ice higher up. Traction required. Gulfside Trail was a mixture of ice, deep drifting snow and rime-covered rock. Very difficult to follow in places! Totally non-existant between Edmands Col and jct w/ Six Husbands Trail - use caution and use an ice ax on the traverse - the slope is quite steep, with sections of windblown snow over icy crust. Would suspect avy danger if the slope were longer. Otherwise, just traction and poles. I used only microspikes, and found it sufficient, but I suppose it depends on your comfort level...
