The Mt. Tremont Trail is one of my adopted trails. The purpose of this trek was to do spring maintenance on the lower half of the trail. The topography is such that the lower half usually loses its snow several weeks before the upper half of the trail which is much steeper and receives very little direct sunlight. The dividing point for the upper and lower halves of the trail is where the trail crosses a branch of Stony Brook (about 1.5 miles from the trailhead).
At the brook crossing mentioned above, there was a rather sharp dividing line between a bare-ground trail and a trail that was still covered with a relatively deep layer of snow. As anticipated beforehand, this is where my trail maintenance ended for this day. In late May, I'll return to do work on the upper half of the trail.
The brook crossing was very doable. There are a few old blowdowns that have been there for years, and they will eventually be removed. They present no problem since they are all easily negotiated.
If you plan to hike along the upper portion of the trail beyond the brook crossing, some sort of traction (perhaps even snowshoes) would be advisable.
The lower half of the trail is terrific for anyone who just want to enjoy a short hike along a picturesque mountain brook.
