Climbed Lyon Mountain (3830 feet) today with my son after a dump of fresh snow. Both trails up were untracked, so we opted for shorter but steeper. It was much more effort than anticipated. It was my first hike of the winter in deep fresh snow and the contrast was staggering...literally. We were lucky to go more than half a mile an hour and got soaked passing under hundreds of trees bowed across the trail, laden with the latest 6 inches. We gave up before the summit and passed many appreciative groups on the way up who were able to enjoy the hike due to our work. It was ample reward.

A little information

You said, we did not summit but other people did reach the top. Is that correct? Was the snow supportive or was it light and fuffy? One last question, about how deep was the snow?

The reason I ask, it is a three hour drive from Albany, and I would like to do both Lyons and Averrill, so any information would be helpful.

Thanks
