Lyon Mt.
We chose the best weather day of the week to attempt this climb, but even this day was predicted to be very cloudy. The trail’s description in Morrissey’s book had us prepared for a hike that would be a physical gauntlet and the nor’easter from the weekend had left local summits white with snow. Current on-line trip reports described conditions above 3500’ with up to 3 feet of snow and ice. We decided to carry more warm clothes, crampons and MSRs so that we were prepared for anything we encountered. Actually, we were in for a magnificent turn of events! The day turned sunny and less windy, the snow was not a factor, even on the summit and the trail, we discovered, had been recently re-cut to create a delightful new route to hike. We topped off this amazing day with coffee and homemade pie at the Noonmark! This adds one more to our fire tower quest as well as the Other 54 total. The trail down low was mostly dry but the wet spots were very wet. The higher we went, the wetter they were and the steep stream bed portion was flowing strong with runoff. Last Friday's snow is beginning to decay. 1 to 3 feet still on the summit.
Poles, dry boots, and increasing layers of clothes were a must. As I said earlier, we took crampons and MSRs but did not need them. Go prepared to for varied winter conditions.
