My friend and I started out this morning on cross country skis leaving from the parking area at Mad Tom Notch in Peru intending to go by Griffith Lake and up into Danby where we left my truck. Didn't take a map because we had done this on bikes last summer and remembered the trail. I marked my truck with the GPS and we set off. A couple of miles or so in we came to a trailhead but didn't think to check the compass or GPS so mostly on my part we cruised on. The weather was really nice, sun shining through a little but overcast. We later reached a trailhead that said Danby was 12 miles behind us! Couldn't be! Looked at the GPS and the compass, sure enough. Anyways we decided to go forward, whats that company always say? "Never stop exploring". We ended up at the trailhead parking lot for Bromley Summit. Investigated around it a little and decided that we couldn't get there from here. Bushwack? Went to Bromley trailhead and decided to ski/hike to Mad Tom Notch, 5 miles and change. The trail up Bromley was pretty well packed, we were able to ski a little but mostly hiked in our xc boots(yes and they worked well!) We made it to the summit in about an hour or so and got funny looks from everyone as we hiked up with our skis lashed to our packs. We began hiking-post holing on the ridge which was very long. The was at least four feet of light nice dry powder. Someone had been through on snowshoes which helped. We were able to ski for a lot of it. The ridge was really cool, it went on for a long time. We stopped to munch on some fuel and kidded about how we got to where we were and where we were supposed to be. There was a lot of snow and a lot blazing going on. It was really cool to be so far in the backcountry with so much snow everywhere. Was a little skeptical that we would ever reach Mad Tom, and that we would have to set up shelter and stay over night. Passed some really good spots for it! I let out a big whoop as I saw the snowmobile trail!! We gave high fives and were treated to sweet downhill to the car. Total time 5 hrs. Distance 15 or so miles. As we headed back to Danby we looked and saw the ridge we had been. :D
