Thinking of a short thruhike from Rt 11/30 on the AT/LT up and over Bromley Mountain to Mad Tom Notch Road. How bad/good is that road from Peru? It looks like there is a house halfway up it and I can sort of make out the parking area on the south side of the road, just past where the LT crosses the road.... My friend and I are going to drop a car there in the morning and just wondering how that road is, in as far as roughness, etc.?

P.S. Why is Tom mad? And why does a lot of people in VT seem to be Mad... Mad River Valley, Mad River Glen... Mad Tom??? :D

You obviously havent driven any back roads in VT during mud season. Its enough to drive anyone mad;)

Watch for trailhead car break-ins in that area. Happened to folks I was with last summer.
That's probably why Tom is so mad.

The road is generally fine for cars in summer, although once when I went there it was barricaded off for washouts so I had to go elsewhere

I seem to recall a winter parking lot past the last house, as you will be doing the distance only once at your speed that would be a viable option to driving all the way to the trail

The far end of the road at the trail to Griffith Lake once had a problem with porcupines chewing on salty parts of parked cars, if this meant brake lines it could be exciting coming back down the notch

Hey Roy, I did a search here and found your post from I think 2010 which mentions both the snowmobile lot a bit east of the trailhead and the porcupine warning!

Thanks all for the insight!

Jay

Oops, my car spot had car problems, so I wound up parking on Rt 11/30 and going up and back to Bromley and then up and back to Spruce.. in that order too... Nice peaks, crazy road to cross though... (maybe that is why Tom is mad)
