Date of Hike: Saturday, May 19th
Trails: Old Jackson Road, Madison Gulf Trail, Osgood Cutoff, Osgood Trail, Jefferson Loop, Clay Loop, Crawford Path, Davis Path, Glen Boulder Trail, The Direttissima
Trail Conditions: Old Jackson Road is in good shape. Madison Gulf Trail has an old path that splits right a few tenths of a mile before hooking onto the Great Gulf Trail so stay left, the biggest water crossing was easy, there were a couple of two hop brook crossings along the way that were easy as well. Osgood Trail has a few minor step overs and duck unders below treeline and the cairns are easy to follow above treeline. Gulfside Trail has snow on the east slope of Jefferson in the usual spot just below the Jefferson Loop Trail junction, it's melting away but will still be there for a little longer and it's soft snow so it's easy to get across. Clay Loop is fine. Davis Path is great until dropping below treeline heading south to Isolation, trail is ok to a mucky mess where the old wooden planks are rotted and sinking. Glen Boulder Trail needs a little trimming back in the first half mile where the scrub is, other than that it's in good shape. The Direttissima is fine with rough footing.
Special Equipment: none
Comments: Felt like mid summer up above treeline, very warm and sunny (sunblock a must!), tons of people out in the usual popular spots. Met a trail runner and his dog doing the same loop, pretty impressive how fast they navigated the trails, awesome stuff! The Davis Path between the Lawn Cutoff and treeline heading to Isolation is a beautiful stretch of hiking, it was nice running into fellow VFTT - The Original Woody! Black flies and annoying bugs were out in spots but not bad if you kept moving Pictures / Trip Report
