Trail and Mountain names should go in the thread TITLE
Date of Hike: 24 February 2012
Trail Conditions: Valley Way was icy down low and had one significant blow down also down low. Avoided by taking Fallsway. Osgood from hut to summit was mixed rock, ice, and snow, easy to stay on crust most of the way. Trail sign for Air Line Cutoff is down and out but laying near the junction. This had a foot +/- of drifted snow. Upper Bruin also has drifted snow, about a foot. Short section of Airline in between was mostly rock with ice.
Special Equipment Required: I wore crampons (G-10s) from about 2.5 miles in on the Valley at an ice bulge until the same spot on the descent. They worked today but any traction would have probably been okay in the conditions. Wind and cold weather gear with me but temps and wind both moderate.
Comments: Great conditions for a prestorm hike. Wind on the top of Madison was maybe in the 20's and the moderate temps made an ideal day to play around Star Lake for awhile. No moose chillin' at the lake today but went to see the beautiful quartz. Hard to see in all the snow at first! Ran into a group of three on VW on my way out starting a traverse attempt.
