Route: from Success Pond Road: Notch Trail, Mahoosuc Trail, May Cutoff, Speck Pond Trail.
Conditions: muddy, slick rock, slick bog bridges.
Special Equipment: none.
Comments: our first hike of the Notch and the Arm, which once upon a time was on the NE 100 Highest but has apparently "shrunk." =) Great fun. We saw a bear shuffling across Success Pond Road (which is open and passable from Berlin NH to route 26). Also spotted a spruce grouse, turkeys, hares, and (!) some sandhill cranes, in a field in Gray, Maine, en route to the trailhead. Numerous southbounders and section hikers out today, and a few other day trippers.
Happy Independence Day!
