Date of Hike: 8/8/09 - 8/9/09
Trail Conditions: Carlo Col trail had some mud but was more remarkable because the NH side seemed to be a big clearcut. Ugly.
The ridges, especially on the Goose Eye range seemed to have had a lot of recent work done, including lots of new bog bridges, some with ladder-like boards for increased traction. Ladders in good shape all around.
Mahoosuc Notch was dry and we had no trouble at all getting through in a bit over an hour. The climb up Mahoosuc Arm was uneventful for us, but I could see it being a very serious problem in the rain, especially towards the last push on those endless slabs. I saw lots of heavily eroded side-trails around them, perhaps they should install a few rungs or something on those slabs to save the trail.
Took the May cutoff back to Success Pond Rd, no issues, and the latter half was very gentle on the feet.
Special Equipment Required: Poles for the mountains and good boots for the notch.
Comments: Full Goose Shelter was very crowded, us and several others didn't even get a tent platform, but at least it was a clear night so it was comfortable. LOTS of thru-hiker traffic at the moment. Had no problems thumbing a ride back to our truck on the Success Pond Rd.
