Doing some researcch on the Maine 4000 ftrs. I've got the AMC Maine Guide / maps, but would like to read a few 'step-by-step' accounts / trip reports - pref on-line.

I've found such Maine info to be somewhat 'thin'. An initial look indicates hikes to/fro the Maine mts to be longer - more like an ADK hike than a VT or typ NH hike - so would like to be informed / prepared. For VT, Mo has a few web pages that describe those peaks, but nothing about ME. etc.

Any suggestions??

The first thing to do is to check out the many excellent Trip Reports and Trail Condition posts here on the Maine 4k peaks. Beyond that, here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Since most of the peaks are on or close to the Appalachian Trail, you could order the Maine AT maps: AT Guide and Maps.

2. You might also want to get the DeLorme Maine Atlas and Gazeteer for driving the Maine highways and dirt roads. You can get one at most gas stations, general stores and hunting/fishing stores in the state.

Personally, I think the Maine AMC guide combined with the Maine Atlas and Gazeteer is quite adequate for what you want to do, except for Mt. Redington. There are many threads about how to do that peak.

Good luck. The Maine mountains are special.

Regards,
Marty

I've found Bob and Geri's website to be about the best for info on the Maine 4K's. Try http://rbhayes.net/hike.htm
We just got back from a trip to Maine and found their descriptions to be invaluable. Thanks Bob and Geri.

Their site combined with the AMC Mountain Guide has pretty much been what I have been using.

I had my doubts about the Maine 4K's but I really enjoyed my trips. Save the Bigelows and Kitahdin for good weather days.

Happy Trails

what Glenn and Marty said.

I will add that the Maine 4k's aren't really longer than any of the Whites. I day-hiked all of them and find them pretty comparable to the average NH4K with the exception that Katahdin is like the Northern Presis.

The hardest part is getting to and/or finding the trailheads as the roads aren't always marked the same as the map.
