I have a few weeks of vacation to take in October and was considering doing some hiking in Maine and Vermont. My thoughts were to hike the 4K's. What guide books and maps are recommended? I currently have the AMC Maine Mountain Guide and the Garmin Mapsource software. Will this be enough for Maine?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I'm always amazed at the quality of the responses to info requests on this site.

The only Maine 4K that won't be covered in the Maine Mountain Guide is Redington. You can get a description of that route from the 4000-Footer website www.amc4000footer.org/redington.htm (there are also various trip reports on VFTT, which may provide updated conditions).

For Vermont 4Ks, you should pick up the GMC's Long Trail Guide.

We have trip reports including maps and directions for all of the Maine Peaks and most of the Vermont peaks on our Hiking Trip Reports web page.

Please feel free to write us with any specific questions you may have. October will be a great time to be in the mountains!

I would also recommend the Day Hikers guide to Vermont (all other hikes not on the long trail) also published by the Green Mountain club link. There have been past threads on this site on vermont hiking. Here is one:
