Younger folks may not remember the last budworm infestation in Maine but for those who do it made quite am impact to the woods. In softwood forests of maine, the budworms killed entire stands close to 100%. The solution then was wholesale clearcutting before the dead trees burned. I hiked in the Reddington valley a few years after the epidemic and there were no trees of any height from Reddington to Spaulding. The best way to describe the place was a big meadow.
