Hopefully I will be climbing some peaks in Maine north of the AT this summer. Are the fire towers still standing on Big Squaw?, Big Spencer?, Number Four? are there any other standing (or collapsed) towers in that area?

Thanks
Pb

Kibby Mountain is great, very remote, fantastic views, the old tower platform was pretty much intact the last time I was there. There is a good trail description in the AMC ME Guide. :)

Yeah I climbed that one last summer - it's still good and there is also one on Chain of Ponds Snow (which I chickened out of - one of those 70' jobs). Unfortunately both of those were foggy days. Coburn has one too which we had on a blue sky day in November - great.

But anyone know about Big Squaw, Big Spencer, or Number Four?

Big Moose (ne Squaw) and Big Spencer had towers standing in October, although neither's cab was accessible . Number four I dunno (it's not a 2kp!)

Note that both of these are only about 10' and similar views from ground

Number Four had just the platform left when I was there ~10 years ago

Wow, what a nice restoration effort on the Coburn Mtn tower! Number Four may be just a "2KP", but it's worth the effort to climb this trailed peak as long as the tower stand is still there (very limited view without it). The start point was relocated some years back because of clear cut logging at lower mountain levels. An update was sent to DeLorme Atlas (Maine) showing new logging roads and the shortened No. 4 trail start location, but I didn't follow up to see if it was implemented or not.
