I know I should be writing my trip report, cleaning my boots, washing my socks or paying my overdue bills, but this is more fun.

Guess the names and view points for the following mountains I photographed in the last 2 weeks (more or less). They are all in Maine. Less credit if you look at a map. No credit if you search my albums for a match. Fellow hikers who were there are not eligible. Have fun.

Mystery Mountain #1
Extra credit: which way are the fir waves moving?

Mystery Mountain #2
One of my favorite shots.

Mystery Mountain #3
Sorry for the weather.

Mystery Mountain #4
Extra credit for all the peaks in the background.

Mystery Mountain #5

Mystery Mountain #6
Extra credit: name all the ponds.

Mystery Mountain #7
A tough one.

Mystery Mountain #8
Easy.

Mystery Mountain #9
Lesser known. Hint: note it's prominence.

Mystery Mountain #10
A give away.

Post your guesses here.

Hi Spencer

I will specify that Peak of the Ridges is not one of them. But you may be ineligible since you are too smart. :) :)

Being a forester, you should get the extra credit on #1.

#4 - Looks like a view across the Table Lands on Katahdin from Pamola Peak, with Doubletop, Coe and the Brothers in the background. Am I even close?

-dave-

Almost perfect David. Just check the peaks and count from left to right and you'll get them.

Yeah

Yeah, I think Dave's got #4, but O-J-I is tucked in there in front of Doubletop, and the far right is thus South Brother, with North out of the frame. I know some of the others, but not all, so it must be time to go back to Baxter.

Can you give me #5 as Doubletop, from the bridge over Nesowadnehunk Stream on the road in to Kidney Pond?

Hey Pb, did you happen to get one of "Easterner Mountain", which Spencer has been telling me about? I can't find it on the map.

Nice pics and a fun quiz!

P.S. Edited just for spelling, I swear.

Right on #4 and #5.

Not sure what "Eaterner Mountain" is. Is that discussion here somewhere?

#6 ?

Hey, I think everybody is in the Catskills getting soaked with rain. I just hope we get the ballgame in this afternoon. Since it's so quiet, I'll try one more with #6.

Oh, I did have a look at my map for some of the ponds, so give me less credit, if I am even correct!

You are up on the AT, maybe around Thoreau Spring, looking back more or less ESE.

That would make the ponds clockwise Grassy, Daicey, Lilly Pad, Kidney (I think I see a cabin), Tracy and Elbow.

The near peak is Sentinel, and the fog behind it lying over the West Branch of the Penobscot. The far peak is perhaps mighty Big Spencer Mountain (seems like someone else here should have known that one), way out by Lobster Lake.

Too much fun.

Good one Al, Sentinel it is. The only nit-pick is that I was on the Hunt Spur, not the plateau. Once you get past the Gateway, you can't really see down to the lakes. I'm not sure myself about the far mountain but Big Spencer is probably right. The Lake is probably some arm of Chesuncook Lake, but with all the lakes out there, who knows.

Seeing Big Spencer stick out from this distance in the morning mist gives a lot of credibility to the NE Fifty Finest list, don't you think? (It's #45)

Can any experts here can add anything?

#1 is Barren with S. Brother in the background. The waves are moving uphill or west in this case

#2 is S. and N. Turner across Basin Pond

#3 I'll guess Doubletop from the eastern route, but I'm really not sure

#7 is Barren with Coe and the shoulders of OJI and S. Brother - probably from near the Gateway with the camera zoomed out to exclude the Owl

#8 The Owl

#9 I'd guess Big Spencer or Sentinel.

#10 OJI (those slides are still readable with a bit of imagination)

...and here's a picture of "Easterner"

Spencer, Pretty good.

#1 good one. Love those fir waves in this shot. Question to Spencer: Yes, the waves seem to be moving uphill (westward) but isn't the prevailing wind out of the northwest (which would push them downhill)?

#2 Yes, but where was the viewpoint? Extra credit: what kind of tree is that between the Turners?

#3 is not Doubletop.

#7 Yes, but it's shot from lower down on the Hunt Spur.

#9 It's not Sentinel and I'm pretty positive it's not Big Spencer which would be about 20 miles away from where I was standing which was not in Baxter State Park (hint). I'm pretty sure it's what I think it is.

Keep those guesses coming.

#1 The prevailing wind for the region is, but the summits and ridges on the west side of the Klondike block all that. So there are more localized weather patterns there. Take a look at this shot between the Owl and NW Plateau for some really good views of the waves.

#2 The viewpoint is probably somewhere on the lower Dudley trail. Maybe on the way to Pamola Caves. The tree is a red spruce with flagging to the east, but I also notice the mountain ash in the lower left of the picture.

#3 how about Pamola and Chimney from somewhere near RB or Avalanche field (you must be in a fairly recent clearing b/c I see some young white pine in front of you). Is it even in the park?

#9 Now that I'm looking at the map and you implied it's a NEFF, I'll guess Baker, but I'm not convinced. How about letting us know where you were standing for this shot.

#2 - Right on. I was on the way back from the Pamola Caves. Can't remember if it was on the Caves trail or Dudley.

#3 - No where near. I guess this is harder than I thought it would be.

#9 - Sorry, I didn't mean to imply it was on the NE FF. OK, I was on White Cap.

Dear Mister Kroto.

Please note that I specified I took the shot of #9 from White Cap. Note also that this is the White Cap (3654') in the 100 Mile Wilderness north Of Gulf Hagas, not the White Cap (3856') north of Rangeley which has no view, as you well know.

To see COP Snow from White Cap would take an awfully clear day and excellent eyesight since it is I'd guess about 120 miles away, to say nothing about intervening mountains such as Baker, Coburn and Spencer.

You are right however about #3. ;)

Glad to hear from you recent report that you had "unbelievable" views from Hunter. Could you see Marcy? :D

Next ...

Bingo! You got it Spencer. Congratulations.

Now it's down to #3.

Here's the link again: Mystery Mountain #3

All you folks back from the Catskills, give it a look and a guess.

Hint: it's in Piscataquis County (not Franklin County Mr.Kroto). If it's not guessed by tomorrow I'll give another clue.

Pb

I'm done guessing. I should get even and post some of my pictures. I'm sure that I have at least one that would stump even you :)

As for WhiteCap North of Rangeley, it happens to be one that I climbed on a cloudy day. I would imagine that there are some views - just not from the summit. I do remember seeing something from the logging roads. Sorry that I did not know that you were not in that neck of the woods for the past 2 weeks. I guess I was too busy hiking to follow your itinerary that closely.

BTW PB, I got FANTASTIC views from Hunter! I believe that I could see Audrey, Seema, Blue, Nat, Dawn, Marge, and LittleBear. Unfortunately Marcy could not join us ;) I'll take Angels on a rainy day anytime, anyplace. Even HarryK is always a sight for sore eyes! (and he showed up to the Gathering - a little rain never keeps him away!)

Geesum Crow, this crew is rough!

Papa, I was just sitting here and cracking myself up and had a great idea for a new avatar for you. Next time you are on a summit, feed a Whiskey-Jack and label it "PB and J"

All in fun...

#3 ?

I guess this is the toughest one.

It almost looks like the view from Big Wilson Cliffs, but not quite.

Barren?
