We stayed at Marcy Dam and hiked Marcy 5/12 and Colden 5/13. The last 2 miles of going to Marcy is completely snowpacked on the northern exposures (save the summit proper) and Yaktrax or similar are still very helpful. Colden had less snow, but Yaktrax would be helpful on the north side just below the summit proper.

Marcy Dam camping area was beautiful as always, but there was a huge amount of trash in the area. It's frustrating that in one of the few locations with paid NYDEC rangers and a truck trail (to haul out the trash easily), there would still be loads of garbage accumulated over months. We hauled out a chunk of trash using the empty part of our bear canister and strapped several pairs of broken Yaktrak to our backpacks (that people had left in the middle of the trail), but you could have filled a dumpster with the amount of garbage there.

If you are planning to visit during the weekend of May 19, Rte 73 is planned to be 100% closed for roadwork (check ADK website for updates), and the detour would add 20 minutes or so to you transit time from I-87 to Adirondack Loj.
