Raining in the morning, misty most of the day. The usual muddy places on the Calamity Brook trail are indeed muddy. Herbert Brook herd path has several blowdowns, but not bad. Lots of waterfalls and moss. Walking in the brook is possible but slippery. I tried to put some of the toppled cairns back, though the trail is easy to follow. Very little snow remains, but up high the trail is very wet, very green, very wonderful. Truly the magic forest today. Blackflies swarming back at Upper works in the afternoon both around me (stinky and dank) and around a fellow Vermonter just starting out (so dry and clean) who could hardly stand still to put his boots on.
