trails: calamity brook trail, herbert brook herd path
conditions: first time on calamity brook trail since the major re route in the first couple of miles. pretty nice. some mud patches farther in. herd path to marshall was generally easy to follow. some significant mud in places, but never awful by any means. route crosses over the brook numerous times and all crossings were low.
equipment: water filter was great to have given the heat. still ended up a bit dehydrated.
comments: nice hike. some good views from the brook bed ascending marshall and from points around and near the summit. real hot by the early afternoon. was still a bit wiped from seymour/sewards the day before so the heat took its toll. if by chance you decide to sleep in the upper works lot, as i did the night before, expect some nocturnal visits from rodents (in the car) and maybe even a bear (thankfully stayed outside of the car). great to spend a couple more days in the high peaks.
