trails: imp trail (north branch), north carter trail, carter-moriah trail, carter dome trail, nineteen mile brook trail, roadwalk
conditions: dry and frosty trail low on imp. light snowfall in the morning eventually covered the trail with patches of ice on the ledges higher up and on the side slope past the face on the way to the north carter trail junction. some ice hidden underneath snow warranted caution. a light coat of snow over middle carter continued to hide patchy ice and slowed things down a bit. once in the col between middle and south the snow dissipated and no longer covered the trail and it was mostly dry/frozen trail from there all the way to carter dome. carter dome trail below zeta pass was generally free of snow with a few small patches of ice up high. water crossings were all ok in terms of volume, but some tricky steps on snowy/icy rocks at times. removed about a dozen blowdowns on carter-moriah and carter dome trails.
equipment: carried microspikes, but did not use them.
comments: the forecast didn't quite come through on this one, but some neat views did eventually come through higher up later in the day. the snow that fell this morning slowed things down enough in conjunction with hidden ice that we cut our planned day short and dropped back down from carter dome. cold temps up high especially when exposed to the wind. thanks to cynthia for a good hike.
