trails: ammonoosuc ravine trail, crawford path, monroe loop trail
conditions: lots of parking at the cog base, along with many cars today. some of it is pretty muddy. packed snow on the ammo down low. softened a bit in the afternoon. above the gem pool more packed snow along with some ice bulges and exposed rock to treeline. pretty soft in spots above treeline and leaving the packed track often resulted in postholing. packed snow with occasional ice from treeline to the ridge. water running underneath the footbed in places was a bit disconcerting. snow and ice on the monroe loop trail. pretty rocky in the last couple hundred yards or so to the summit. the one significant water crossing and the outlet of gem pool were still snowbridged though many streamlets were open down low.
equipment: i wore snowshoes from the trailhead to monroe and back down to the hut. used crampons on the descent to the gem pool and found them especially nice below treeline on the steeps.
comments: nice to get in a short hike and take in the beautiful day. the lack of snow up high is pretty wild and it felt more like late april rather than mid march. little to no wind up high and very warm. some nice undercast early on. lots of people on the trail today. great to be out.
