I've been working on my Winter 4000 footer list since my return from Peru and was anxious to get a couple more under my belt...7 left.
I had emailed Bob & Geri my picture link(s), okay I love to take pics. They had emailed back that they'd love to hike with me again and hear about my latest adventures.
We had talked about Monroe and maybe Eisenhower if the weather co-operated and they were feeling good, great 2 more!!! I met them at the Highland Ctr planning for a possible traverse. Bob drove up to the Cog and we suited up, the wind was howlling and it was bitter cold..Weather report was for low winds! We started up the trail and soon thinned down for the climb up. We were bare booting past the Gem Pool and climbed up the steeps fine. Stopped just below treeline to crampon up before the ice that we knew wasn't far ahead. Met up with a couple trying for Washington for the second day in a row, high winds had kept them to only Monroe on Saturday. So the 5 of us continued up to the "dungeon" for a break to drink/eat and suit up again. As we were hiking up Bob & I were kinda eyeing Mt Washington...it was getting clearer as the morning went on and the sky was a beautifull blue!
Bob asked Geri how about Mt Washington, it is our first hike in the new year, and it does look beautifull today. It was calling us, so being Bob & Geri up we went heading for the summit!! ( I'm really excited to get Washington done)..
So the five of us suited up for brisk winds and cold, but as we hiked up it was getting warmer and warmer. It was a beautifull day, and the sun was shining, unbelievable day for winter hiking! We arrived at the summit as a few other groups arrived via other trails. We had to wait our turn for summit shots. It was so warm I was able to put on my Active SA tee shirt for a photo to send to my new friends in Peru of me up on Mt Washington in January! It was an amazing day up at the summit, we hung out for about 30 minutes before we headed down..reluctantly. You just don't get that many warm sunny days on top of Mt Washington especially in January with hardly any wind! We kept looking back in amazement as the sun continued to shine on the top all afternoon!
We hiked back to The Lakes of the Clouds cabin and Bob and I hiked up Monroe, the clouds were coming in but Washington still was sunny and breathtaking. I tagged the summit and Bob took my summit shot and down we went to join Geri and hike out. We made it out to the car before dark, and had a wonderfull day hiking with good friends and new ones on one of those incredible breathtaking days in the White Mountains in Winter! None of us could get enough of starring at the beauty around us, I hope you enjoy my pics! (I thinnned them down)
PS: We found a pair of crampons on the trail out, if someone is missing them, email me!
