Hard Packed Snow with half an inch of new snow falling as we hiked. Softened just a little in the afternoon. Water crossings almost all still bridged, but two or three are open, and one had a boot-sized hole in it.
We bare booted until I found one of the two patches of blue ice that were hiding under the new snow, slipped and fell. We all put on microspikes then, and they were perfect. One of us put on snowshoes going downhill just for practice.
It was a great day for hiking. We didn't see anyone else all day, but we did see some other tracks near the trailhead. It looked like one of them found the same patch of ice I did.
