We joined Hiker Ed, John of J&J, and several new friends and started up the road around 8:20 AM.

The conditions were fabulous! We took turns breaking trail, as a group of 9. There was around 1 foot of new snow. We hiked all day out of the clouds and when we got up high, we were surrounded by undercast! The only Mountains visible were The Franconias and the Pressies. Amazing! We arrived at the summit around 12:30, and left around 1:00, back at the Lodge by 3:00 and out at 3:40. Almost no wind, temps in the single digits, but sunny all day.

3 down, 45 to go! An awesome day with some old and new friends! :)

Hey ...

Rather than posting a separate report, I'll just add a few notes here re: my experience with skiing the Snapper & Carriage Road sat 1/15.

Conditions: Bony! Thin cover! Lots of rocks. I need to make a date with the P-Tex candle pronto.

Was the juice worth the squeeze? Maybe just barely. There are a few sweet rides to be gotten -- notably the half mile or so from timberline over to the Glencliff junction and the first quarter mile below that, and most of the Snapper. Parts of CR are wind scoured down to bare rubble, though.

Strange what a difference 20 miles can make -- the Willey Range is buried under 3 feet plus; you can hike all day up there and not see a single rock. Anyone with solid tree skiing skills might find the bonanza up there right now.

what trail did you take up? on the 10th i went up the carriage road. 4.5 hours up 3 down. not enough snow, my ankles were killing me on the way down from stepping on rocks under the snow and turning my ankles some, even with snowshoes. if you see one of my kahtoolas up there, let me know. it takes 10 years to put them on, you need the jaws of life to get them off, but OF COURSE the thing falls off my boot when i walked into one of two places where the snow was a foot and a half deep. i did some digging in the area on the way down but couldnt find. what a life. one thing i will say, i had never done the carriage road in its entirety, it was GORGEOUS, and looked really cool to cross country ski up and down, or even downhill ski down at times. saw 2 other people up high that day who looked like they came from the north pole they were so covered in white.

Gorge Brook. We walked to the Lodge, crossed the bridge, turned left, and then right.

Sorry, no spikes were found. They seem to be easy to lose, a friend lost one in the Catskills this winter as well. Maybe the 2 of you should talk! :D

This mountain is certainly one of my favorites. Especially the view of the Prezis over the Franconia Ridge. How were the winds from the west on the 14th?

Any pics? Would love to see some!
