This past weekend (8/21-22) was the 65th Anniversary celebration for the Ravine Lodge. Built in 1938 as a ski lodge, it has gone through many ups and down, and has been put to different uses over the years. Gathered for the weekend were Outing Club members from the classes of 1937 to 2007, a fairly hefty 70 year span.
J Wilcox Brown '37 was the outing club manager in 1938 when the Lodge was built, so he saw it all. He worked with the crew building the Lodge and then worked there for years. Also in attendance were folks who were working on trailcrew at the summit house that year, so we had the view from both sides. A great evening was had by all.
Sunday was clear and warm, so a bunch of us did trailwork. I headed up Snapper with my pole saw and pulaski, to clear waterbars and cut the high branches before ski season. I looped over the Carriage Road to the summit, where I spend some time talking to Laura, the Alpine Steward, who's job it is to hike up the mountain 5 days a week and educate hikers about the fragile mountain habitat. Not a bad summer job. Then down Gorge Brook, cutting more high branches.
A great weekend, lots of history and friends, a fine day for a hike, and trailwork. Everything you can ask from the mountains.
