Trail had hard-packed snow from the car to the summit. Snowmobiles were prohibited above the first bridge, less than a mile in. We had hoped to ski at least some of it but the conditions didn't match our skill sets, lack thereof, as the lower two miles were hard, fast and rutty with moguls and deep crossing gullies, some with mud or open water. One tough section with many blowdowns in the half mile below the Glencliff intersection. Some ice on the stretch above timberline but, overall, really nice hiking conditions.
We bare booted to timberline without post holing (surface was hard enough that even a moose hadn't broken through!) and put on traction (Microspikes) for the last quarter mile to deal with the ice.
Our disappointment with the ski conditions didn't last as the trail provided a beautiful alternative to the oh-so-familiar Glencliff Trail. Shirtsleeves day with warm sun, no wind and long views. Great to have a leisurely lunch on Moosilauke's summit in February.
