The forecast for thursday looked good so a few Trailwrights decided a hike up Moosilauke may be just what we all needed. Bill needed it for his list on the AMC 4,000s so that was the pick of the day.
A really cool pleasent morning greeted us as we slowly made our way to the first falls on the Beaver brook trail. The aroma (cresote) greeted us well before the first bridge, but was gone in no time.
It has been a lot of years since I last hiked this trail, but remembering the many times before, that a steep trail awaited and a slow ascent would be best for this old timer and Bill. The rest, Peg,Bruce and his son Andrew would not mind the slower pace.
The Cascades were not disapointing with plenty of water all the way up and of course a picture would be needed.
It was as steep as I remembered, but the trail construction of rock steps and the many wood blocks for steps anchored on re-bar impressed me. I don't remember that many wood blocks before. I have always been amazed at the rock work that was installed and from my experiences doing those kinds of things I could not help being very thankful and would love to say thanks to whoever did that work and that it is appreciated by this maintainer. However I was also very concerned that the water bars along the entire trail to the Asquam jct. were completely full and overflowing.I don't believe they have been cleaned in some time, and that was SAD.
We eventually arrived at the Shelter site and of course had to check out the smoke wafting over the trail. There was still one AT hiker still there that had not left for the day. Bill said he heard snoring, so another person was there too.
The view from the shelter towards Franconia ridge was really something. The AT hiker asked what the view was and we informed him that he would be on that ridge in a day or two going from right to left to Lafeyette on the left. He was impressed.
We continued on and up and around Blue with Andrews comments about pizza in Lincoln the night before a constant reminder that it sure would go good then, with a nice cold one as well. We met about a dozen thrue hikers going north so Andrew had to mention the pizza to all.
The trail eased up as we rouded Blue and had glimpses down Jobildunk Ravine and the summit with a row of cairns being seen just before the Benton trail Jct.
Turning left up the trail ,soon brought us out and above tree line and in a few minutes we were on top with about 20 other hikers having lunch and enjoying the views on the 10th.highest peak on the list of 48.
With such a nice day and temps in the 50s and a gentle breeze, we hated to leave the summit but taking in one last 360 look and a few pictures, down we went..
We met several more hikers pasing us going down, all Thrue hikers going North. We did talk to all the hikers going both ways and welcomed all to NH that had not been here before, and Andrew made them aware of Lincoln and Pizza once again.
For obvious reasons we had to take extra care decending down over the steeper sections but in time we made it down safely. It was a really enjoying hike all the way and with such great company, weather, views etc, who could ask for more except maybe for Andrew , Pizza and a cold one OR two.
