Moosilauke via Ravine Lodge Rd and Gorge Brook Trail – 3/9/14
Date of Hike: 3/9/14
Trails: Ravine Lodge Road and Gorge Brook Trail
Conditions: Both the road and the trail have the makings of a spectacular monorail. So long as you stay on the path you have a wonderfully compacted and smooth path. Step just inches to the right or left and you could be up to your knees in the fluffy white stuff. The summit is still snow covered with a few rocks peeking through
Special Equipment Required: Most of our group stuck with microspikes (and 1 pair or hillsounds), though our fearless leader barebooted all day with nary a problem. Not a posthole to be seen … unless you step off trail. Then you have the potential to disappear into a spruce trap.
Comments: We had a fast trip up and down Moosilauke, with gorgeous views. The wind was bitter on any bare skin, but probably no more than 20 mph (yes, I must buy a kestrel). Don’t let the road walk deter you, this is a nice way to go even with the extra distance.
