Date of Hike: July 4, 2008

Trail Conditions: Muddy in a few places, especially beyond the Ridge-Beaver Brook junction. There are a couple of nuisance blowdowns on the way up the Ridge.

Special Equipment Required: None. Gaiters might be useful for the muddy spots.

Comments: My first time up Moosilauke -- beautiful, beautiful hike, and great conditions. Nice and cool most of the way, and didn't see a soul until I got to the Ridge-Beaver Brook junction; it was pretty busy after that, with about 20 on the summit around lunchtime. There are two blowdowns on the Ridge Trail that required me to take off my pack and crawl under. Most of the trail was quite dry despite the recent rains, but there a few places with ankle-deep mud where water naturally collects on the Ridge and Beaver Brook-to-summit sections. You can get around them, but if you have gaiters you could easily go through them. Carriage Road and Snapper Trails were fine, if a little buggy (no bites, just a nuisance). The recent rains have all the creeks flowing briskly, so the sound of water made for a pleasant hike up the lower Ridge and down the Snapper. Great hike, great day.
