trails: stony brook trail, carter-moriah trail
conditions: parking for stony brook trail plowed by the end of the day. we used the old route of the trail to start the parking for which is not plowed or maintained. new snow depths were pretty consistent over the entire hike with some deviation. 2-6 inches pretty well sums it up. this was over bony trail down low with patchy ice and a combination of ledge and black/blue ice on carter-moriah trail. a few deep drifts in wind blown areas. care had to be taken once on the ledges due to the ice. significant ice on the final ascent to the summit that we used a short bushwack to avoid. it could be tackled, but we chose to find a go around. water crossings were not an issue.
equipment: microspikes pretty well fit the bill today. the new snow is not deep or consolidated enough for snowshoes yet. that is likely to change soon. some may be more comfortable in crampons on some of the ledges.
comments: a fitting day to complete the nh48 grid on moriah as todays conditions are consistent with a number of other days i have been up there over the years. cold and blowing sleet/snow on the ledges and summit made for a short, but exhilarating stay. a big thanks to mark and cynthia for braving the roads to come out today, to all my other hiking friends that have joined me out there over the last couple of years and to hikered and other finishers for inspiration.
