Despite the rain the trail tended to be dry until the unbridged crossing of the Stony Brook after that it was very wet in places. In some cases you were walking up a creek.

There were no blowdowns of any significance on the trails. There is one ice bulge a short distance before the intersection where the Carter-Moriah trail and the AT part ways that I was able to get by with care. Right at that intersection there is some snow. Otherwise the trails are clear of snow and ice. No traction is needed on these trails. I met one person today who had come up the AT from route 2. He told me there are some difficult sections of ice coming up where traction could be used.

The one major crossing of the Stony Brook was not too difficult today. It was a bit higher in the afternoon covering some rocks that were bare in the morning but it was possible to cross with only minor wading.

All in all I would rate this approach to Moriah as a bit more difficult than the Carter Moriah trail from Bangor road.

I had the startling experience of almost stepping on a moose. He was sleeping along side of the trail and I didn't see him until he jumped up and ran off. Lauky let him know what he'd do to him if he ever got that close to us again. :D

The day started well. First as I was getting Lauky out of the car a Gorham Police car pulled in obviously checking to be sure I was the owner. I really appreciated the gesture. :) Then as we started off I very quickly found the geocache that's hidden at the trailhead. :)

It rained lightly most of the day, the rocks down below and the ledges up on top were very slippery. It was cold and windy up on the ledges. There were no views. What a great way to spend the day with my little buddy. :)
