Looking for advice on motels in Millinocket to use as wimpy base camp for BSP (the "boss" doesn't dig sleeping in a tent or lean-to). We're not picky. We just want it cheap and clean. Thanks in advance.

I stayed at the Econolodge (Katahdin Inn) in Millinocket. It worked out fine. They advertised that coffee, cereal and doughnuts would be available at 5:00 am, but they were out at 3:30 am, so we were able to partake before we drove to Baxter. Here is the link:Econolodge - Katahdin Inn.

Enjoy your trip to God's Country!

Yup. It's not the only game in town but it's the major one. Ignore the early Soviet-style block architecture, and you'll find what you need there: indoor pool, laundromat, early a.m. eats, free email computer, grocery store a stone's throw, and lots of backpacks out in the hallways. They also allow dogs in certain rooms.

Nothing against the Econolodge but a better deal is The Hotel Terrace, 52 Medway Rd. They have an excellent buffet breakfast, too - very reasonable. Their dinner meals are pricey though - you're better off going someplace else for them.

Having stayed at the Econo Lodge, I agree with Kevin. It took us an hour to check in, our room had a water-stained, collapsing ceiling, the AC didn't work, and they overcharged us for our room, claiming that we asked for a crib. Of course it didn't show up on the bill until the next month's credit card statement.

Another possibility is the Big Moose Inn (http://www.bigmoosecabins.com/), which is closer to Baxter State Park. It has rooms, cabins, and camping areas, and a good and reasonable restaurant. It's about a five or ten minute drive west from downtown, but worth it.

Dinner at the Terrace is also good, esp. prime rib. We liked the Appalachian Trail diner downtown too.

I stayed at a site there before, nice people. We also got dissed at the AT Diner that weekend, that was different.

We got a cabin at the Big Moose which was good. If you are staying over several days, it's also a money saver since there is a little kitchen in there and you can cook some of your meals.

Bathrooms and showers are in a separate building through.

This thread would not be complete without mention of The Adobe Motel, located within stumbling distance of La Casa. Haven't stayed there myself, but have heard trip reports from some members of this site who have.

If you don't mind being a touch further away, I've had several good experiences at the Gateway Inn in Medway, right where you first get off of I-95.

They have an indoor pool - invaluable for your winter Baxter trip!
:)

I've stayed at the Best Western & the Terrace (I think it's called the Terrace, it's been 8 years since my last non-rainy day in BSP - It might be the Atrium) :(

Best Western had decent food,

As far as La Casa goes, I have a hard time thinking all the talent (combined) in Millinnocket would have as many teeth as I do - not counting my fake ones!

I can also vouch for the Medway - have stayed there 2 or 3 times as well. It's very convenient to I95, so if that fits into your plans, it puts you about 30 minutes closer to interstate than staying in Millinocket.
