This was my first hike up Cardigan, but it surely will not be my last.
WOW! What a little jem of a peak, the views were just amazing.
We started out very late, just after 4pm. The road into the state park was a little sketchy, but passable. The gate is still closed, and there is still a good amount of snow on the road, but it is melting very fast.
This being a very popular trail, we passed a lot of people and other dogs on their way back down, and the trail was very easy to follow. Only one large blowdown. We ended up barebooting, and bare pawing on Sadie's count the whole way.
We had the summit to ourselves, and it was just spectactular. The 360 degree views are always a treat. To look out and play the name that mountian game, to see Chocorua and see how far from home I was, to see Washington and the Franconia Ride, etc... just stunning.
The wind had picked up a bit, so we sat and took in as much as we could, and then headed back down. The trip out was rather quick. We were folowing out a group of college kids who slipped and slid the whole way out, making it tough for us to do anything but the same.
It took us roughly 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down to the cars.
I am sad to report that the foot problem has not gone away, and even on an easy hike like this, it was quite painful on the downs. On the ride home it seemed to get even worse, and once home getting my boot off was not a treat.
Thank you Len for going with me to 'finally' climb this one, I have wanted to see the top of this one for some time. I drove by the park signs every day for several months, but was always too tired to stop and hike. So glad I finally did, and I know it will not be my last!
This was my first hike with a dog in quite a while. I have a 'borrowed' dog for a few weeks and she is a real joy to be around. She listens to me, and is gentle and fairly quiet. She is a good little hiker too.
All in all it was a great day to be out in the woods!
