Date of Hike: 12 January 2008
Conditions: Hard pack snow from trail head to summit. One stream crossing early on Signal Ridge Trail somewhat tricky but nothing bad. Temps hovering near freezing, generally below. Light wind, mostly sunny.
Equipment: Poles useful. Conditions were perfect for barebooting so snowshoes stayed on pack all day. Post-holing not a problem. Nice temps but full winter gear necessary regardless.
Comments: Awesome day to start the winter 2008 season. 14 miles of fairly relentless climbing, even if not particularly difficult at any point, has reminded me that I better stay in shape for this! Views from the Summit and Signal Ridge were fantastic. Had only come up the Desolation Trail in the past and that was about 8 years ago. A good day for #44 of the winter NH 4000 footers.
