trails: orange cove trail, bushwhack
conditions: i parked off of new colony road in orange just before the gate and start of orange cove trail. the gate was open and driving farther looked tempting, but only would have saved a couple tenths before the road became muddy and impassable. a truck had clearly tried to continue up the road and had sunk pretty deep into mud doing some damage to the road. the trail follows the road up to its height of land at an old log landing. it was still wet and soft in spots, but dry in others. from the landing i started my bushwhack almost due north to mount catalouchee which is visible from the landing. woods were very nice and open all the way to the summit. mostly hardwood and birch woods with a patch of evergreens right around the top. the only snow i saw were a couple small patches on the northern side of the summit area. descending i dropped down into the col with a minor eastern bump and spent some time exploring the interesting woods full of moose paths and sign. i then picked up a very clear game trail leading down south from the col and followed it for much of the way back down to the road.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: nice hike. the woods on catalouchee were a real treat. lots of moose sign and paths and some limited views to cardigan. very cool.
