Geneva, Karie and I decided to hike in the rain on Sunday, we all needed to get out and get some exercise and clear the cobwebs, both on the trail and in our heads. We decided on the traditional way up and down Chocorua, well for me at least.
The Liberty trail was a little moist due to recent and current rain, and the trail itself had the consistency of a long forgotten half eaten bowl of corn flakes, with a few rocks and rivulets thrown in here and there. The river crossings were not bad to get across and we made it to the cabin in good time.
I was a little worried about Geneva getting up that one sketchy part where the metal bar is stuck in the granite, but I shouldn’t have been. She just walked right up the trail like she had suction cups on her paws. She patiently waited for us, since we did not have such good traction.
The next section involves about a 5’ climb up to a ledge, again I thought she may have trouble. Again she proved me wrong. I stood behind her and showed her where the trail was thinking I may have to lift her up to it, but she just bounded right up the crack like she had done this her whole life. Amazing, I should get her a harness and a helmet.
Geneva checked out all the non views on the section over to the trail junction. Which makes me a little nervous, I don’t really think I am scared of heights, I just have a very healthy respect for gravity.
After a few photo ops at the trail junction we decided to forgo the .2 or .3 miles (depending on the map or the sign) to the summit since it was windy and wet and we were not having the best of luck with traction.
The Brook Trail is always a fun experience. Sort of like a few miles of a giant, unforgiving slip and slide. Geneva looked like she was having a blast running ahead, then coming back to check on our progress then going ahead a bit to check out the trail, she probably does at least 3 times the mileage as I do when we hike. No wonder she immediately crashes once she gets in the car!
Once we made it past the granite slip and slide ledges we settled into a nice steady pace and listened to the brook and a few beautiful bird songs. Geneva had fun jumping into any water she could find and darting here and there still. I wish I could harness some of that energy!
All in all, it was a grand day out in the rain, and of course, as soon as we made it back to the car, out came the sun!
